Heavy snowfall and a storm will hit the eastern part of Iceland later today. The storm is expected to last until tomorrow morning.

Winds of up to 90 km/h (55mph) are forecast from Húsavík to Höfn while the wind speed west of Höfn in the Öræfi region, Southeast Iceland, will reach up to 180 km/h (110 mph). Combined with sleet, the conditions are unsuitable for driving.

Snowfall earlier today closed the road to Raufarhöfn, Northeast Iceland, and the only road to Seyðisfjörður, over Fjarðarheiði mountain pass, has been closed for a couple of days, mbl.is reports. No one knows when it can be reopened.

Smyril Line, which operates the only car ferry connecting Iceland to the continent, arrives and departs from Seyðisfjörður.
