Damage to Rental Car

I sympathize with Ms. Abron’s anguish over having to pay to rebuild her rental car, but I don’t think the problem is that the car agencies and travel guides don’t give out information on the risks. I think the issue is that visitors (like me) don’t believe what they’re told until reality educates them. One doesn’t pay attention to the wind speed signs leaving towns in the south until one crosses the sand flats in a stiff breeze and gets scared.

One chuckles at the advice to stop your car pointing into the prevailing wind until the wind
catches the door as you open it, and you get yanked out onto the pavement with the door’s tortured metal screeching just over your head.

And so it goes.  Maybe it would make a difference if the rental agent said, “All these warnings are for real—it’s not just scare tactics from our lawyers,” but I doubt it.

I think it was my third trip to Iceland before I began to pay serious attention to opening the car doors, but I had been given the warning over and over.
